Insider's View

Majorca Insider 1. La Residencia

Of all the hotels in Majorca, this one is special to me because it was where I stayed the first time I visited the island. My husband had planned a secret long weekend at La Residencia in the beautiful village of Deia and I was bowled over by the honey stone, rambling historic building with its heavenly gardens, terraces and pool. It's a relaxed, chic and idyllic retreat with a first class restaurant in El Olivo. For me it's probably the most desirable hotel on Majorca.

2.  Aimia
The greatest selling point of contemporary Aimia in the Port of Soller is that it's a Majorcan family run hotel with an ultra friendly and relaxed feel. It's one of the best value for money yet classy hotels on the island with large, tastefully decorated bedrooms with all technical mod cons and wide private balconies. The pool is glorious and yet the hotel is just a hop and skip from the beach.

3.  St Regis Mardavall
Some many moons ago I was invited to spend a weekend at the Mardavall. It blew me away! I've never before been to a hotel boasting Bang & Olufsen music systems in the bedrooms. I naturally gravitate towards historic and discreet retreats rather than big, showy hotels like the Mardavall but it cannot be faulted. The suites are sumptuous, the spa spectacular and the restaurant is faultless. There's a children's club and wonderful views of the sea.

4.  Son Brull
I was invited to Son Brull when it was first opened by the Majorcan Suau family and thought it the most avant garde creation. Housed inside a stunning creamy mansion is an ultra contemporary hotel which offers clean, unfussy design and at times rather stark décor. The house is tucked away in rolling verdant hills and yet is only a stones throw from Pollensa town. An intimate jewel of a hotel.

5.  L'Hermitage Hotel
Years ago I went hiking in the Orient valley and came across this extraordinary hotel, formerly a monastery. It's very grand and full of grown up dark furniture and swanky swags but it has a wonderful atmosphere, divine spa and a delightful restaurant housed in an old oil mill. The landscape setting is breathtaking and totally tranquil which makes the Hermitage a real get away from it all retreat.

6.  Sa Rota d'en Palern
Small can often be best and at this idyllic little hideaway it's never more true. Tucked away in Montuiri in the centre of the island this 18th century finca has only nine rooms but 30 hectares of pinewoods and orchards and wonderful views over Es Pla, the central plain. The rooms have large private balconies or terraces and are stylish and contemporary.

7.  Bon Sol
This much loved family run hotel, situated in Illetas and overlooking the Bay of Palma, has a warm and friendly atmosphere and is a well cared for and maintained property. The bar is wonderfully comfortable and welcoming and the pretty restaurant is light and serves up delicious Mediterranean fare. There's an old fashioned, quaint charm about the place and some rather quirky interior design such as some Arabic décor and if I recall some armour clad knights lurking in the grand lobby!

8.  Hotel Ca'n Moragues
Right in the heart of Arta's old town, Can Moragues is a beautiful 18th century house with only eight rooms which makes it cosy and intimate. There are many authentic exposed stone walls and a simple and yet sophisticated décor which is pleasing on the eye. Some rooms offer elegant four poster beds and the large windows look out on to rolling countryside. A blissfully quiet and restful haunt for those needing total rest and relaxation.

9.  Son Julia Country House Hotel
When I visited Son Julia just after it opened I admit that I found it rather characterless but in time it's grown on me! The historic 15th century mansion is utterly bewitching and the sense of calm and tranquility is palpable. I tried the excellent restaurant and sampled a fun spa treatment and came away feeling very relaxed. Handily, this rural retreat in Llucmajor isn't far from the airport although, set in rolling countryside, you wouldn't know it.

10.  Hotel Rural Valldemosa
This imposing stone mansion is set on a small hill on the outskirts of Valldemosa. It has a contemporary feel and yet has many nice historic touches that hint at its former grandeur as a former grandee's home. The stone terraces, well groomed gardens and pretty pool offer a relaxing ambience although there is also an excellent indoor pool set in natural rock within the building. The bedrooms are decked out in chic contemporary style and are given names that hark back to famed characters from the island's past such as philosopher Ramon Llull, Archduke Luis Salvador and even George Sand, the controversial lover of Chopin, who stayed with him for a disastrous sojourn in Valldemosa's monastery in 1838. acts only as an agent in respect of all bookings we take and/or make on your behalf.
