A few holidays later, they discovered an old ruin of a rural finca in Soller and bought it on a whim.

Anna Nicholas Anna Nicholas is the author of four books about living in rural Majorca. She and her Scottish husband, Alan, live in Soller in the north west of the island with their thirteen year old son, Olly, and an ever growing menagerie of animals. They originally moved to the Soller Valley back in 2001 having lived right in the heart of London where they ran a busy public relations agency.

Sari, the au pair of Anna's sister, was a native of the beautiful village of Fornalutx in Mallorca and urged her to pay the island a visit. Having settled for a holiday in Deia and Soller, Anna and her husband decided that the magical golden valley of Soller was where they'd eventually like to live. Anna Nicholas Not long after that, they moved to the island although Anna commuted regularly back to London in order to run the PR agency until able to merge it and live in Soller full time.

In her time Anna has been an international adjudicator for the Guinness Book of Records. In fact she has just completed another book, Strictly off the Record, about her time working Norris McWhirter, the book's founder. As a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, she once led an expedition with explorer Col John Blashford-Snell to deliver a grand piano to a remote Amerindian tribe.

Anna was brought up in Kent and London although she is actually a bit of a wild Celt being of Irish, Scottish and Welsh extraction. During her childhood, she spent many unconventional family holidays travelling around off the map destinations in a battered old car and on a shoe string. It is these experiences that have led to her life long love of travel and adventure. She is a keen runner, having completed an international marathon annually for the last seven years on behalf of her favourite cause, a small orphanage in Sri Lanka which she has befriended and visits regularly.

Anna has been a freelance journalist for many years, having written features for the Financial Times, Independent, Evening Standard, Sunday Telegraph, Daily Express and Tatler among others. For the last six years she has contributed a weekly column to the Majorca Daily Bulletin and is a thrice weekly contributor to Telegraph Expat and Telegraph Weekly.
