Ca'n Picafort was originally a small fishing village which has grown to become a thriving tourist destination that is popular with families. The beach reaches all the way to Alcudia and the pedestrianised promenade that runs alonside the beach is lined with shops, bars and restaurants. There are a couple of nightclubs and market days are a Tuesday afternoon and a Friday morning. The resort has the usual watersports available aswell as many boat trips leaving from the marina which is always a nice alternative to lazing about on the beach all day.
Popular attractions include the Son Real Necropolis which is about a 20 minute walk from the small beach of Son Baulo; the largest karting track in Majorca and the waterpark and giant maze that can be found in nearby resorts so whatever you fancy, you are sure to find it here.
Insider's View
The town of Ca'n Picafort which spreads its tentacles to Alcudia in the north was once a modest fishing village, and until fifty years ago home to just 200 inhabitants. It sits plum in the middle of the vast Bay of Alcudia, where many a tourists arrive during the summer to fry on the golden beach that unfurls seductively to the sizzling horizon. I get a bit miffed when people are snobby about big lively resorts like Ca'n Picafort because it's actually got a lot going for it. Sure its palm-lined waterfront is packed with hotels but it's got great facilities, loads of sea front cafés and restaurants, a nice little tourist market every Tuesday and Friday, and wonderful beaches.
Two of my favourite sun spots are Ses Casetes dels Capellans, a nice wide beach with great vistas and Son Real which is backed by sand dunes and is a bit wild and woolly with Aleppo pines and bush land. One of my favourite walks, a mere ten minute stroll from Son Bauló beach, is the ancient burial ground of Son Real Necropolis, known as the Cemetery of the Phoenicians.
For those who want to go the extra mile, do visit my other favourite haunt, the farmstead Finca Publica de Son Real. Here in the friendly information office, they offer lots of advice about nature trails locally. My teenage son is keen on cart racing and loves the track at the back of the town and also never tires of the huge Hidropark pool complex. And for birdwatchers, don't forget a visit to the wetlands of S'Albufera Nature Park to the west.
An event I try not to miss is the wonderfully eccentric Amollada d'Anneres, otherwise known as the duck-catching competition. This memorable celebration, held annually on 15 August, sees 3000 visitors descend on the beach to watch locals diving into the waves to catch yellow plastic ducks. They used to be real ducks but animal lovers eventually put a stop to that!
