Cala Mayor Holidays

Travel Agent's View

Travel Agents View The busy resort of Cala Mayor is largely residential but is becoming very popular with tourists and a lot of money has been spent on developing the resort so it can cater for the ever increasing numbers.

Not only is Cala Mayor a popular holiday destination, it is also home to the Spanish Royal family during the summer months. If it is a quiet drink or a relaxing meal you are looking for you will certainly find it along the palm-tree lined waterfront.

Water sports are available on the beach throughout the day but things are quite quiet at night with most of the entertainment being hotel based so if you are looking for a good night out you can easily visit one of the many resorts close by.

Cala Mayor is a good base for exploring the many sights and attractions the area has to offer.

Insider's View

Majorca Insider Just ten minutes by car from Palma is Cala Mayor, unlikely summer home of King Juan Carlos. Mind you, when you see his palace and more importantly the sea views, you'll understand why he comes here.

My son used to school in Cala Mayor and so we got to know the local restaurants very well, not least Nawaab, one of the best known Indian restaurants in the area.

The great thing about this small resort is that it is slap bang in the middle of the action. There's Palma for nightlife and Porto Pi shopping Centre with its multi screen cinema complex and excellent shops, and Tito's nightclub and the elegant Harbour Club just along the main Palma road.

In Cala Mayor itself there are some good and safe sandy beaches a stone's throw from the main road and also the famed Fundació Pilar I Joan Miró which is home to 2,500 works as well as 100 paintings by the artist Miró. Pilar Junosa, the wife of Miró came from Soller where I live, which is probably why they ended up in Mallorca. Miró had his studio in Cala Mayor ever since he arrived in the fifties and until his death in 1983. You can visit the studio, exhibition and house which is a real treat.

Nightlife in Cala Mayor isn't spectacular but there are some good bars and bistros such as Casa Tauro which has a pretty terrace flanked by Mediterranean flowers. Near the main beach there is a regular Flamenco show at Al Andalus. It's a bit hammy but still good value.

If you fancy a dander outside of the area, only one kilometer up the road you'll arrive in Genova where there are some famed caves, the Coves de Genova. They're not as amazing as the Coves de Drac in the East of the island, but fascinating all the same. There are several bustling restaurants here too including the well known C'an Pedro which is a magnet for lively tourist groups. It does serve excellent suckling pig so worth the noise and lively banter coming from the surrounding tables.
