Cala Rajada is a busy resort but tends to be more popular with German and French tourists than it is with the British. There are plenty of facilities on the beaches but they are quite small and can get quite crowded. The resort is home to a busy tourist harbour and there are many cafes, bars and restaurants to be found along the promenade.
Activities in the resort include watersports, golfing, cycling and birdwatching due to the beach coves and rocky shoreline. The airport can be found about 70km away.
Insider's View
Sometimes this busy fishing port and resort gets a bad rap for being too commercialised and too large but I beg to differ. Undoubtedly Cala Rajada was one of the first prominent resorts spawned on the north east side of the island but for that very reason it has every facility on hand from excellent restaurants and hotels to shops and nightlife. I find the wild and craggy coastline here is spectacular with its pine clad hills, and fine beaches and hidden coves. If you're feeling frisky you can even pop by Cala Torta, the nudist beach, although that's not quite my style!
There is so much to do in Cala Rajada and it acts as a natural hub for boat trips, either just across the bay or to the island of Menorca. The waterfront near the harbour offers every kind of bar and restaurant, my personal favourite being Café Noah which does good tapas and is fun by night with live music and delicious cocktails. There are some lively festivals in the town with music and firework displays such as the celebration of Patron Saint, Son Roc, on 16 August and the festival of the fishermen on 15 July.
Still, if you want to get away from the hubbub, you can avoid cramped beaches such as Son Moll, and head for the cove of Cala Gat or Cala Agulla across the headland with its backcloth of pines and clear waters and white sands. Rancho Bonanza offers some fun organised pony rides around the area and for walkers, a nice trip is to Sa Torre Cega-literally meaning Blind Tower- which has no windows. It has a glorious Mediterranean sculpture garden in which you can discover a Henry Moore and even an Auguste Rodin masterpiece.
If you're feeling flush, visit Ses Rotges, an elegant restaurant with French menu and romantic patio, offering scrumptious fare.
