Travel Agents View The small resort of Canyamel is the ideal destination for a relaxing holiday. There are many watersports available on the wide sandy beach. The resort is also popular with walkers and cyclists and not forgetting golfers as there are 4 golf courses within 15 minutes drive.

A stay in Canyamel is not complete without a visit to the old look out tower which offers great views over the bay and the surrounding area and holds the occasional concert. The airport is about 65km away.

Insider's View

Majorca Insider Canyamel which is situated in a picturesque corner of the northeast of the island, takes its name from the sugar cane which was grown in the area three hundred years ago. Set on its own bay surrounded by wooded hills, the resort has a superb wide and sandy beach with beautiful clear waters.

Not surprisingly, water sports are a major attraction here as well as walking and cycling trips around the leafy countryside and along the impressive coastlines. For tennis fans, Canyamel has 100 courts and professional coaches are on hand to give lessons and for the enthusiastic golfer, there are four golf courses in the vicinity.

There is a reasonable choice of bars and restaurants in the resort such as El Meson, a long established popular haunt close to the beach which is great for pizzas and pastas as well as typical Mallorcan dishes. A nearby site I enjoy visiting is the Torre de Canyamel, a mediaeval fortified tower which has been expertly preserved and refurbished and is currently being turned into an artisan centre.

Inland, the traditional town of Capdepera - with its fine 14th Century castle - is a must see. Likewise Arta, a town I often potter around in the summer time, has the magnificent Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, also dating back 700 years and two prehistoric Talayot sites nearby which hark back over 3000 years.

There are some fantastic isolated beaches and coves to the north, such as Cala Mesquida which are great for swimming. So if you can tear yourself away from the novel on the beach, do try some exploring on foot. You won't be disappointed. Insider Sig
