Palma de Majorca Holidays
Travel Agent's ViewPalma is the ideal resort for those who like to be in the midst of the action both day and night
Palma, the capital city of Majorca lies on the south side of the island and is by far one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. There are many historic attractions in Palma, two of the most popular being Sa Seu Cathedral and Bellvar Castle which is at the top of a wooded hill and offers great views over Palma Bay.
Another must see is the 14th century Gothic Cathedral which is in actual fact the city's best known land mark, backing on to the old part of the city and dominating the waterfront. As an alternative to sightseeing you take take a leisurely stroll along La Rambla which is a tree lined avenue with stalls selling flowers and newspapers and makes a relaxing change from the busy streets.
Another popular pastime is a visit to the marina where many of the world's most prestigious yachts have been moored. There are a great number of bars and restaurants so whatever your budget or mood, you will be sure to find something that suits.
Palma also has a buzzing nightlife with a good choice of nightclubs staying open well into the early hours. Palma is the ideal resort for those who like to be in the midst of the action both day and night.
Insider's Viewby Anna Nicholas
...medieval streets clustered with art galleries, trendy boutiques and stylish bars and restaurants, Palma is a must-visit city
I'm always amazed that so many tourists bypass Palma, which is criminal. With its striking, gothic cathedral, Arab baths and old town's labyrinth of winding, cobbled, medieval streets clustered with art galleries, trendy boutiques and stylish bars and restaurants, Palma is a must-visit city. Although I live in Soller, a good 40 minute drive away, I often visit to explore the shops or to dine at one of my favourite restaurants. Even strolling around the city and visiting the many free art exhibitions is a pleasure I like to repeat.
One little word of advice, if you have a car, try to leave it at the hotel. Driving and parking in Palma is a nightmare and utterly confusing. There are plenty of buses, trains and taxis around and if you're based in the city, the best way to explore is on foot. Having said that the Palma open top bus tours are fantastic and take you to some of the Capital's most famous landmarks. If you like art and imaginative contemporary architecture Es Baluard Museum of Art is worth visiting although it doesn't hold a particularly notable collection anymore. However, it's housed in a magnificent stone building within the city walls and offers stunning vistas over the Bay of Palma. Another less known museum is Casa Museu J Torrents Lladó, the house and studio of Lladó the artist, which is at Calle de La Portella, 9, a few streets away from the Cathedral. It is one of the hidden jewels of the city.
A stone's throw from Es Baluard will lead you to the bustling Es Born, a shady central boulevard lined with premier branded shops and cafés as well as Can Solleric, a magnificent 18th-century mansion and gallery for temporary exhibitions.
Directly opposite is Calle Sant Nicolas, a small street with a big reputation that is one of my favourite haunts. It is full of independently owned stores and unlike the rest of Palma, retailers here don't take a siesta at lunchtime. Actually Spain's famous department store, Cortes Ingles, of which there are two in Palma, and some of the bigger fashion chains stay open all day long. On Jaime III, Palma's equivalent to Bond Street, devoted shoe fetishists can let their imaginations run wild. Jaime Mascaro, Menorca's king of shoes, and Majorcan brand, Yanko, a stiletto stab away, offer beautifully designed shoes although the prices will make your eyes water.
For a moment of calm, search out one of the two historic Ca'n Joan de S'Aigo quaint tea rooms that are beloved by locals and serve the best, most authentic Majorcan pastries. Strolling up towards Las Ramblas, a junior version of Barcelona's famed boulevard, is Fundación La Caixa, home to excellent exhibitions, a popular café and art bookshop. After stopping by here, I often lunch at nearby Tast for tapas which is popular with locals and is just a few minutes walk from Jaime III or for shabby chic, pop over to the Santa Catalina district and try my all time favourite Italian restaurant, Via Appia on Calle Fabrica. It has two restaurants, one up-market and almost directly opposite, a more casual and better value affair with taster menu, so head there! The three restaurants recently opened by British award winning chef, Mark Fosh- Simply Fosh, Misa, and Tasca de Blanquera-which are clustered in the area off Plaça España- all offer value for money, fabulous menu del dias, and are now regarded as three of the best in the Capital.
