Pollensa Holidays

Travel Agent's View

Travel Agents View Pollensa is a small medieval town that is situated in the north east of Majorca, about 45 minutes drive from the airport.

The focal point of Pollensa is the town square which has many cafes and bars to visit as well as a number of galleries which are of great interest to the many writers and artists that visit here.

Sunday is market day so if you are looking for a bargain you will be sure to find one here.

If you are feeling energetic you could have a game of golf on the 9 hole course or perhaps take the long walk up the 365 Calvaria steps which lead to a hillside chapel with some great views of the town and surrounding area.

Insider's View

Majorca Insider For a fantastic day out, I can think of nowhere better than Pollensa town. It really does have everything from exquisite restaurants to sophisticated shops and markets and a great deal of fascinating historic attractions.

The Romans settled here many moons ago and a Roman bridge still exists near the main town. Aside from that the Pollença museum housed in an old Dominican convent is worth a visit and displays local artists' works and archaeological finds. The Calvari of 365 steps which pilgrims in former times, used to climb en route to the 18th century chapel at the top, is a bit of a schlep but worth it for the spectacular views.

The town is famous for its Moors and Christians festival which takes place in early August and is a mad and noisy bun fight but great fun. It celebrates the town's victory over a Moorish raid in 1550 and locals dress up in colourful costumes playing either marauding Moors or defending Mallorcan peasants. Living in Soller, we have our own version of the event held in May, but both are good value.

The other important event in Pollensa is the classical music festival held in July and August which attracts leading international orchestras and performers. It's a must if you're a music fan.

There are some great restaurants in the town such as C'an Costa in which famed poet Miquel Costa I Llobera was born. It serves up unusual combinations and ostrich dishes. For more modest budgets, Il Giordino serves superb Italian influenced meals and has friendly welcoming staff.

Nearby is a fine nine hole golf course which my husband rates and just 15 minutes drive away is the relaxing port with its fine beaches, variety of shops and many bars and restaurants.
