Travel Agents View Situated on the east coast, Porto Colom is still a working fishing village with the brightly coloured fishing houses at the end of the harbour giving you a true sense of Majorcan life.

The resort is based around the harbour where you will find some very nice bars, restaurants and shops. The main beach is just 500m from the town centre and has been awarded a blue flag so is ideal for families with young children.

There are many watersports on the beach and a variety of boat trips to nearby resorts. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area so car hire is certainly worth considering to make the most of your stay.

Majorca Insider Once a sleepy fishing village, Porto Colom on the east coast today relies fairly heavily on tourism and the yachting fraternity. Once upon a time it was the main port for Felanitx but when the vine plague phylloxera killed off the wine industry in the 1870's, the port declined and tourism took over.

This is where you'll find one of the few deep natural harbours on the island which actually gives the place the feel of a small fishing community. It's very pretty with pastel coloured houses around its circumference and old fishing vessels lining the quay.

There are many water sports on offer here such as diving at Bahia Azul Dive Centre or kayaking. In the town there's a sleepy old square where you can enjoy a copa de vino, a glass of wine or tapas, at bars such as Bar Els Tamarells which sports a seahorse sign on its frontage.

You'll find plenty of wonderful creamy beaches in the vicinity such as Cala Marçal which also has a lovely walking trail and Cala S'Arenal - preferred by the locals - which is less busy. I like to cycle in the area and explore some of the natural country trails leading off from the town, but if you get a kick out of speeding, motorbikes are easily hired.

For nightlife, Calipso offers some lively late night vibes and modern Spanish music. Insider Sig
