Travel Agents View The main beach ... has been awarded a blue flag so is ideal for families with young children

Situated on the east coast, Porto Colom is still a working fishing village with the brightly coloured fishing houses at the end of the harbour giving you a true sense of Majorcan life.

The resort is based around the harbour where you will find some very nice bars, restaurants and shops. The main beach is just 500m from the town centre and has been awarded a blue flag so is ideal for families with young children.

There are many watersports on the beach and a variety of boat trips to nearby resorts. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area so car hire is certainly worth considering to make the most of your stay.

Insider's View

Majorca Insider This is where you'll find one of the few deep natural harbours on the island which actually gives the place the feel of a small fishing community.

Once a sleepy fishing village, Porto Colom on the east coast today relies fairly heavily on tourism and the yachting fraternity. Once upon a time it was the main port for Felanitx but when the vine plague phylloxera killed off the wine industry in the 1870's, the port declined and tourism took over. The resort has archeological significance too being the location for one of the best preserved prehistoric burial sites on the island, known as ‘navetas’.

This is where you'll find one of the few deep natural harbours on Majorca which actually gives the place the feel of a small fishing community. It's very pretty with its old sandstone church of Sant Jaume, pastel coloured houses around its circumference and antique fishing vessels lining the quay. There are many water sports on offer here such as windsurfing and scuba diving at Bahia Azul Dive Centre or kayaking. In the town there's a sleepy old square where you can enjoy una copa de vino, a glass of wine or delicious tapas at bars such as Bar Els Tamarells which sports a seahorse sign on its frontage. Another good restaurant is Cellar Sasinia which is well known for its seafood specialities. For nightlife, Calipso offers some lively late night vibes and modern Spanish music and McKennas Irish Bar by Cala Marçal beach serves real Guinness and is open for music and cocktails into the wee small hours.

You'll find plenty of wonderful creamy beaches in the vicinity such as Cala Marçal which also has a lovely walking trail and Cala S'Arenal- preferred by the locals- which is less busy. Sea taxis will take you to Cala d'Or and Cala Figuera, both of which make pleasant day excursions.

I like to cycle in the area and explore some of the natural country trails leading off from the town, but if you get a kick out of speeding, motorbikes are easily hired. Although Porto Colom has a small market every Tuesday and Saturday, it's fun to take a taxi into nearby Felanitx to explore its Sunday market and also to travel further afield to Santanyi for a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants.
