Porto Cristo Holidays

Travel Agent's View

Travel Agents View Porto Cristo is situated on the east coast of Majorca and is home to one of the island's most popular attractions, the Caves of Drach. Many tourists also come to visit the aquarium near the Caves of Drach and the Caves of Ham which has an underground lake, a real must to see.

The resort itself has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, some of which are situated at the harbour area or on the main road behind the beach. There is not much in the way of nightlife in the resort but neighbouring resorts will offer something a bit livelier.

The main activities here are hiking, cycling and walking but that is about all so if it is non-stop entertainment you are looking for then Porto Cristo is not ideal for you.

Transfer time from the airport is roughly 1 and a half hours which gives plenty of time to take in the surroundings.

Insider's View

Majorca Insider The town of Porto Cristo in the east, has a natural harbour and its very own beach. The town lies just behind the harbour and is low key and relaxed with some excellent restaurants and bars.

There are two crazy theories about how Porto Cristo, meaning Port of Christ, came by its name. Some say that a pair of oxes dropped a crucifix here on the way to Palma and refused to leave the town, and the other is that hundreds of years ago a mysterious crucifix was found floating in a boat in the port. Whatever the weather, it's a friendly and family orientated resort and wonderfully peaceful.

Having recently written a book focusing on the Spanish Civil War in Mallorca, I visited the area because it was the only town actually captured by Republican forces in 1936. It all ended in tears when they were forced to retreat by the Fascists, so a short lived victory.

Today visitors come here to enjoy the marina, working harbour with its colourful old fishing boats, and to relax. The beach isn't the best being rather shingly, but it is conveniently placed right in the harbour. Nearby is Cala Millor, with lots of attractions and bustle and there are tiny coves to be explored which have beautiful sandy beaches.

A few restaurants worth mentioning are Sa Pedra and Sa Llonja for grilled fish and meats, and Flamingo for one of the best paellas. I also like Café de Baixamar for snacks.

If you're up for some day excursions I would recommend the popular Coves de Drach and Coves de Ham, the rather stunning subterranean caves a few kilometers away. If you like hiking and cycling like I do, there's lots to explore such as the Talaiot de Gruta and other interesting landmarks which are quite literally on your doorstep.

Alternatively you can just lie back on a sun lounger and enjoy the peace of the harbour.
