Puerto de Pollensa enjoys a privileged setting on the bay of Pollensa, right in the north eastern corner of the island and about 45 minutes drive from the airport. The area around the port is pedestrianised and full of many cafes and restaurants, ideal for a relaxing bite to eat while watching the boats at the marina. There are many more bars and restaurants to be found in the area at the church square which is in the centre of the resort, where things can also get quite lively at night.
The resort is very popular with cyclists who can take advantage of the cycle path that runs all the way to Alcudia which is 8km away. Winter months can be just as popular for cyclists as the summer due to the mild climate and the great scenery.
If you prefer to walk, you could follow the 3km trail through the Boquer valley hills to Cala Boquer, great for birdwatching and it leads to a really nice beach. All in all, a nice resort with a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for family holidays.
Insider's View
When summer comes along I often drive up to Puerto de Pollensa with the family for lunch and a swim. I've always considered the beautiful Bay of Pollensa, as being one of Mallorca's prime resorts and it is one loved by the British. One of the main attractions is the long stretch of sandy beach, shallow waters which is ideal for young children and the excellent local amenities and shops. For water sports fanatics there is scuba diving, glass bottom boat trips and yacht charter and ferry excursions.
This is also a great base for walks and cycle ride excursions with Mallorca's rugged mountain range and coastline nearby. There's Cala Bóquer to the north which is a fairly effortless 2 hour trek and is suitable even for younger children.
Other nearby attractions include the bird sanctuary at S'Albufera - a must during the migration seasons of Spring and Autumn, and Lluc Monastery set high in the mountains and only 30 minutes away.
Intrepid beach fans can discover hidden coves and bays on the Formentor peninsula just to the north with Playa de Formentor perhaps being Mallorca's finest beach.
The port itself has a reasonable array of gift shops with a small market every Wednesday but Pollensa town is better and has a big market on a Sunday in Plaça Mayor. One of my haunts is the British Food Store in the port which is next to the Multihire Shop. This is where I stock up on oatcakes and Marmite! The staff are super friendly and are excellent guides to the town and port.
As for restaurants, bars and cafes, the port offers just about everything from traditional Mallorcan to Chinese. El Posito, close to the town centre, a restaurant and bar, is famed for its Mallorquin cuisine and fresh fish, and offers excellent value with its daily menus. Na Ruixa just off the beach is one of my favourites and has a refreshingly cool terrace and serves up traditional, good value Spanish fare.
