Situated on the south west coast of Majorca lies Santa Ponsa, a thriving resort that is popular with families and not quite as rowdy as it's neighbour Magalluf. The resort has grown over the years and even the beach has had to be made larger to cope with ever increasing number of tourists. There are many cafes, bars and restaurants to be found with live entertainment for the whole family in the resort's square every night.
The pedestrianised promenade is lined with pine trees and also has many bars and restaurants, the perfect place to relax and enjoy a bite to eat away from the hot sands.
If lying about the beach everyday is not your thing then you can take part in the many activities that are available in the resort and neighbouring Magaluf such as watersports, golf, horseriding, go-karting and waterparks.
All in all, a good resort for the whole family and being just 31km from the airport means transfers times are short.
Insider's View
Despite its reputation as being the nesting place of wealthy retired Brits with too much time on their hands, Santa Ponsa is actually home to many working British expats, particularly Irish and Scottish. It's a lively and vibrant resort and one of the most popular along Mallorca's south west coast. Long established as a tourist magnet, the town still retains much of its natural charm and village atmosphere, spread out around the Cala Santa Ponsa. It's said that it has its own microclimate and because of its southerly aspect is fairly warm all year round. There may be some truth in that because it's always been sunny when I've popped by.
As a resort, Santa Ponsa can offer just about every amenity, catering for all types of visitors - families, couples and third generation and because of its proximity to the capital of Palma it has an excellent local bus service to the city.
A mecca for many in this part of the island is the Santa Ponsa Golf and Country Club with its three golf courses (No 1 is open to the public) and its many facilities for spa and beauty treatments. Friends of mine often organise gala evenings and charity events here and it is a dazzling setting for a soirée with wonderful night vistas over the sea. If you want to keep fit while on holiday the club has aerobic and pilates studios, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts (two grass), saunas, steam room and gym. And even a creche.
There are lots of water sports to be had in this area such as jet ski, scuba diving and boat and yacht chartering if you have a few bob. We've gone pony trekking in nearby Calvia which is fun and if you enjoy shopping, there are some excellent gift shops in the town. I like Vela Santa Ponsa which produces beautiful handcrafted candles.
Restaurant wise, the visitor's rather spoilt for choice but we often visit Da Vinci overlooking the marina which has a reliable Mediterranean menu and a friendly atmosphere, good value lunch menu and music in the evenings.
